How Accountants and Law Firms Handle NY LLC Publication
Accountants and law firms generally handle New York LLC publication in one of three ways: some arrange it themselves, some refer the client to a publication service, and some order it from a service on the client's behalf. Whichever route a firm takes, each LLC has the same core requirement under Section 206 of the NY LLC Law (Sections 802, 1203 and 1306 for foreign LLCs and PLLCs): a notice published once a week for six successive weeks in two newspapers designated by the county clerk, an affidavit of publication from each newspaper, and a Certificate of Publication with both affidavits attached, filed with the New York Department of State. The statute's window is 120 days. With LLC Publishers, the whole process takes about 8–10 weeks. That is an estimate, since newspapers and the State set their own pace.
This guide is for accountants and CPAs, bookkeepers, tax preparers, attorneys, law firms and paralegals, business advisors and formation offices: anyone arranging publication for a client, often for several LLCs at once. Firms that order through LLC Publishers send us the LLC names and get one checkout link with every LLC already filled in from New York Department of State records, one card payment, one receipt listing each LLC, and one dashboard for every LLC they order. We handle the newspapers, the affidavits and the filing with the State for each LLC, end to end (how ordering works). To order for several clients, send us your list. LLC Publishers is a document filing service, not a law firm, and nothing here is advice about any firm's professional rules.
NY LLC Publication, Per Client LLC

In Reddit threads we read in October 2026, LLC owners mention an accountant who told the owner about the requirement, a tax preparer who took care of it, and a lawyer who used a publication service. Here is what each route puts on the firm's desk.
| Route | What the firm handles | What the client sees |
|---|---|---|
| The firm arranges it in-house | Finding the county clerk's designated newspapers (in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx, requesting the clerk's assignment for the notice), preparing the notice, placing and paying for both six-week runs, collecting both affidavits, and sending the Certificate of Publication with both affidavits attached to the Department of State | Whatever the firm reports |
| The firm refers the client | A name or a link | The service's own updates |
| The firm orders it for the client | Placing the order, then following each LLC's status | Updates the firm forwards, or copies sent to the client |
What NY LLC Publication Requires for Each Client LLC
Section 206(a) of the New York Limited Liability Company Law sets the requirement for a domestic LLC:
"Within one hundred twenty days after the effectiveness of the initial articles of organization as determined pursuant to subdivision (d) of section two hundred three of this article, a copy of the same or a notice containing the substance thereof shall be published once in each week for six successive weeks, in two newspapers of the county in which the office of the limited liability company is located, one newspaper to be printed weekly and one newspaper to be printed daily, to be designated by the county clerk." Source: NY LLC Law §206(a)
The same subdivision defines what gets filed at the end: "Proof of the publication required by this subdivision, consisting of the certificate of publication of the limited liability company with the affidavits of publication of such newspapers annexed thereto, must be filed with the department of state." The Department of State charges a $50 fee to file the Certificate of Publication.
Foreign LLCs and PLLCs publish under their own sections, with the same six-week, two-newspaper structure. One difference is the date the 120 days run from:
| Entity type | Section | The 120 days run from (the statute's words) |
|---|---|---|
| Domestic LLC | §206(a) | "after the effectiveness of the initial articles of organization" |
| Domestic PLLC | §1203(c)(2)(A) | "after the filing of the articles of organization" |
| Foreign LLC | §802(b)(i) | "after the filing of the application for authority with the department of state" |
| Foreign PLLC | §1306(d)(i) | "after the filing of the application for authority with the department of state" |
For New York City, §206(a) adds that when the county is in a city of one million or more, "such designation shall be as though the copy or notice were a notice or advertisement of judicial proceedings." In practice, the County Clerks in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx assign the two newspapers for each notice. Staten Island's County Clerk publishes a designated list instead. Our NYC borough-to-county map shows which county each borough is.
§206(a) also says what happens when proof of publication is late: "If within one hundred twenty days after its formation, proof of such publication, consisting of the certificate of publication of the limited liability company with the affidavits of publication of the newspapers annexed thereto has not been filed with the department of state, the authority of such limited liability company to carry on, conduct or transact any business in this state shall be suspended, effective as of the expiration of such one hundred twenty day period." The same subdivision provides that when proof of publication "in substantial compliance with the provisions (other than the one hundred twenty day period)" is filed later, "such suspension of such limited liability company's authority to carry on, conduct or transact business shall be annulled." Sections 802, 1203 and 1306 contain parallel provisions.
How the statute applies to a particular LLC is a question for that LLC's attorney. Our missed-deadline guide covers what that means in practice, and our Section 206 explainer quotes the rest of the statute.
What to Collect From Your Client
The notice is built from what the LLC filed with the Department of State, so most of what a firm needs is already in the client's formation paperwork. A typical intake for each LLC:
- The LLC's exact name and its filing. The filing receipt or the filed Articles of Organization. For a foreign LLC, the Application for Authority. The Department of State's Certificate of Publication instructions say: "The name of the limited liability company and the date of filing of its articles of organization must exactly match the records of the Department of State."
- The filing date, and the effective date if the articles state a later one. Depending on the entity type, one of these dates starts the 120 days (see the table above). Our guide to filing date vs. effective date explains the difference.
- The county on record. On a domestic LLC's Articles of Organization (form DOS-1336-f), item SECOND asks for "The county within this state in which the office of the limited liability company is to be located." PLLC and foreign forms state the county in their own items. The notice runs in that county.
- The entity type. Domestic LLC, foreign LLC or PLLC. Each follows its own section (table above). See our guides for foreign LLCs and PLLCs.
- The street address of the principal business location, if any. For a domestic LLC, §206(a)(3-a) lists "the street address of the principal business location, if any" as a notice item, and the standard Articles of Organization form (DOS-1336-f) has no field for it.
- For a PLLC, the profession. §1203(b)(i) says a PLLC's articles of organization "shall state the profession or professions to be practiced by such limited liability company," and the notice items in §1203(c)(2)(A) include "the character or purpose of the business of such professional service limited liability company."
- Who should receive updates. The firm, the client, or both.

The notice items listed in §206(a)
For a domestic LLC, §206(a) says: "The notice shall include:"
- (1) "the name of the limited liability company"
- (2) "the date of filing of the articles of organization with the department of state and, if the date of formation is not the date of filing of the articles of organization, the date of the formation of the limited liability company"
- (3) "the county within this state, in which the office of the limited liability company is located"
- (3-a) "the street address of the principal business location, if any"
- (4) "a statement that the secretary of state has been designated as agent of the limited liability company upon whom process against it may be served and the post office address within or without this state to which the secretary of state shall mail a copy of any process against it served upon him or her"
- (5) "if the limited liability company is to have a registered agent, his or her name and address within this state and a statement that the registered agent is to be the agent of the limited liability company upon whom process against it may be served"
- (6) "if the limited liability company is to have a specific date of dissolution in addition to the events of dissolution set forth in section seven hundred one of this chapter, the latest date upon which the limited liability company is to dissolve"
- (7) "the character or purpose of the business of such limited liability company"
Foreign LLCs and PLLCs follow the lists in their own sections.
How Long NY LLC Publication Takes
The 120-day window is set by statute. How long the work takes depends mostly on the newspapers and the State:
| Step | Typical time |
|---|---|
| Newspaper run | Six successive weeks in each newspaper, set by statute |
| Affidavits from both newspapers | About 1–2 weeks after the last run |
| NY Department of State processes the Certificate of Publication | About 1–2 weeks |
| End to end with LLC Publishers | About 8–10 weeks |
These are estimates. Newspapers and the State set their own pace, so we cannot promise a date for the steps they control. Across the publications we have carried to completion, the median is 57 days from payment to completion. For a week-by-week view, see our 120-day timeline guide.
Handling Multiple Client LLCs at Once
We publish each LLC as its own notice and file each one separately, so every LLC has:
- Its own notice, published once a week for six successive weeks in both newspapers
- Its own affidavit of publication from each newspaper (two per LLC)
- Its own Certificate of Publication and its own $50 state filing fee
- Its own 120-day window, counted from its own date
With LLC Publishers, LLCs in the same county run in that county's designated newspapers, each as its own notice, and LLCs in different counties run in their own counties' newspapers. In Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx the County Clerk assigns the newspapers for each notice, so two LLCs in the same borough can run in different newspapers. Our article on publishing multiple LLCs walks through the per-LLC requirements in detail.
With LLC Publishers, every LLC is its own filing: its own notice, its own two affidavits, its own Certificate of Publication and its own 120-day window.
With LLC Publishers, each LLC is still its own order, but multiple LLCs can be paid together on one checkout link, with one receipt. Domestic LLCs, foreign LLCs and PLLCs can be on the same quote. The ordering steps are below.

What a Finished Publication File Contains
Under §206(a), proof of publication is "the certificate of publication of the limited liability company with the affidavits of publication of such newspapers annexed thereto." A finished file for one LLC holds these documents:
| Document | Where it comes from | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Affidavit of publication, one from each newspaper | Each newspaper, notarized | The newspaper's sworn statement that the notice ran, with the dates it ran |
| Certificate of Publication, with both affidavits attached | Filed with the NY Department of State ($50 state fee) | The LLC's proof of publication |
| The Department of State's response | NY Department of State | What the Department sends back after it processes the Certificate of Publication |
With LLC Publishers, you can download each newspaper's affidavit of publication and the Department of State's response from that LLC's page. Our guides on the documents a publication service should share and original vs. copy affidavits go into each one.
The County on Your Client's Record
Publication runs in the county on the LLC's record. Section 206(a) ties the newspapers to "the county in which the office of the limited liability company is located," and a domestic LLC's Articles of Organization state that county in item SECOND.
A different county is a different filing: a Certificate of Change, under §211-A for a domestic LLC (the Department of State's page) or under §804-A for a foreign LLC. Whether to designate another county is the LLC owner's decision; we do not recommend a county. How a county change affects a particular LLC is a question for that LLC's attorney. If a different county is wanted, we file the Certificate of Change when directed, as a separate order. Our Certificate of Change guide describes that filing.
For a firm ordering on a client's behalf, the order follows the record: we publish in the county on the LLC's record, and the LLC's registered agent and addresses stay as they are. Each price is a one-time fee.
How Ordering Through LLC Publishers Works
For several LLCs at once (a bulk order), the steps are:
- Send us the LLC names. Email support@llcpublishers.com, call or text (631) 813-7738, or use the form on our page for accountants and law firms.
- We prepare one checkout link for all of them. Every LLC is already filled in from New York Department of State records: name, county, filing date and DOS ID. There is nothing for you to type at checkout.
- Review and pay once. You see every LLC, its price and the total on one screen, and pay once by card.
- Get one receipt. Each LLC is on its own line, with its order number, county and amount.
- Track every LLC in one dashboard. Each LLC still gets its own order, its own page and its own filing. We check every notice against the State's record before it runs, so after payment each LLC's page asks for the few items that make its notice exact, such as the LLC's New York filing receipt (for a foreign LLC, its Application for Authority) and the street address of its principal business location, if any.
What We Do for Each LLC
LLC Publishers gives every LLC on your list the full service, from the county clerk to the Certificate of Publication filed with the New York Department of State:
- For Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx, we get the County Clerk's newspaper assignment
- We place the notice in both designated newspapers for six successive weeks
- We pay for and collect the notarized affidavits
- We prepare the Certificate of Publication, attach both affidavits and file it with the New York Department of State through eCorp, the State's online filing system, as a service company, including the $50 state fee. A service company is a business that files documents with the Department of State for others.
- We do this in all 62 counties
Prices and Payment
Each LLC's price is the published, all-inclusive, one-time price for its county, $395–$1,795 across New York's 62 counties (see every county's price). A foreign LLC's price is $500 more for the additional requirements of NY LLC Law §802: a longer notice and more to verify before publishing. Prices differ by county because each county clerk designates different newspapers and those newspapers set their own rates. Firms that order regularly get volume pricing based on their monthly volume; ask us about it when you send your list. Order one LLC or many. There is no account to open and no minimum. Every order carries the same guarantee: Certificate of Publication delivered, or our service fee back under our refund policy.
One Dashboard for Every LLC You Order
Log in with your email and a one-time 6-digit code we send to it. Every LLC ordered with that email appears in one list with its status, with the ones that need you at the top. Each LLC has its own page with a step-by-step timeline and what we still need, and you download its affidavits and the Department of State's response there. Links in our emails open that LLC's page directly. Our guide to tracking your publication online shows the order page.
We keep you posted by email at the address you order with, and copy anyone you ask us to, such as a colleague or your client.

Can domestic LLCs, foreign LLCs and PLLCs be ordered together?
Yes. Domestic LLCs, foreign LLCs and PLLCs can be on the same quote, and each still gets its own order. Each follows its own section of the NY LLC Law: Section 206 for domestic LLCs, Section 802 for foreign LLCs, and Sections 1203 and 1306 for domestic and foreign PLLCs.
Does LLC Publishers change my client's county or registered agent?
We publish in the county on the LLC's record, and the LLC's registered agent and addresses stay as they are. A county change is a separate filing, under Section 211-A for a domestic LLC or Section 804-A for a foreign LLC, that the LLC's owner decides on. If a different county is wanted, we file the Certificate of Change when directed, as a separate order.
How long does publication take for each client LLC?
About 8–10 weeks end to end with LLC Publishers: six successive weeks in the newspapers, then about 1–2 weeks for the affidavits and about 1–2 weeks for the Department of State. These are estimates, since newspapers and the State set their own pace.
Is LLC Publishers a law firm?
No. LLC Publishers is a document filing service, not a law firm, and does not give legal advice. We place the notices, collect the affidavits and file the Certificate of Publication with the New York Department of State.
Key Takeaways
- Firms generally handle NY LLC publication in one of three ways: they arrange it themselves, refer the client to a service, or order it from a service on the client's behalf.
- Each LLC has the same core requirement: two newspapers designated by the county clerk, six successive weeks, an affidavit from each, and a Certificate of Publication filed with the New York Department of State ($50 state fee).
- The 120 days run from a date that depends on the entity type: the effectiveness of the initial articles for a domestic LLC (§206(a)), the filing of the articles for a domestic PLLC (§1203), and the filing of the application for authority for a foreign LLC or PLLC (§802, §1306).
- From the client, a firm typically needs the filing receipt or Articles of Organization (Application for Authority for a foreign LLC), the filing date, the county on record, the entity type, the principal business location's street address if any, the profession for a PLLC, and who should receive updates.
- Multiple LLCs mean multiple filings. With LLC Publishers, each LLC is its own order, and all of them can be on one checkout link with one payment and one receipt.
- A finished file holds each newspaper's affidavit, the Certificate of Publication with both affidavits attached, and the Department of State's response.
