Good to Know

A few helpful tips to make sure your publication goes smoothly:

Confirm with your County Clerk

Newspaper designations can change from time to time. A quick call to the County Clerk's office confirms you have the current list — it only takes a few minutes.

NYC boroughs work a bit differently

In busy counties like Manhattan, Queens, and Brooklyn, the County Clerk typically assigns you a specific newspaper rather than letting you choose. Just call them to get your assignment before placing ads.

A quick call saves time later

Think of it like "measure twice, cut once." Verifying with the County Clerk before you start ensures your publication counts the first time.

Pro tip: Use this tool to see what newspapers are typically designated, then call the County Clerk to confirm before placing your ads.

Understanding Designated Newspapers

What are Designated Newspapers?

Each County Clerk maintains a list of newspapers approved for LLC publication. Only notices published in these designated papers satisfy the legal requirement.

Daily vs. Weekly Papers

NY law requires publication in one daily and one weekly newspaper. The daily runs the ad 6 times in 6 weeks; the weekly runs it once per week for 6 weeks.

County-Specific Requirements

You must publish in newspapers designated by the county where your LLC's office is located. Using papers from another county won't satisfy the requirement.

Verifying Current Designations

Newspaper designations can change. For the most current list, contact your County Clerk's office directly before starting publication.

Why Newspaper Selection Matters

Wrong papers = invalid publication

If you publish in newspapers that aren't on the County Clerk's approved list, you'll have to start over with the correct papers.

Designations change periodically

Counties update their designated newspapers list. A paper that was approved last year may no longer be on the list.

Some counties have limited options

Rural counties may have only one or two designated newspapers, which can affect availability and pricing.

Common Questions

How do newspapers get designated?
Newspapers apply to the County Clerk's office and must meet certain criteria including circulation, print frequency, and local distribution. The Clerk's office maintains and updates this list.
Can I use any newspaper in my county?
No. You must use newspapers specifically designated by your County Clerk for LLC publication. Not all local newspapers are approved — only those on the official designation list.
What if I can't reach a designated newspaper?
Contact your County Clerk's office for the most current list and contact information. Some smaller newspapers may be difficult to reach or have limited availability.
Do NYC boroughs have different newspapers?
Yes. Each NYC borough (Bronx, Brooklyn/Kings, Manhattan/New York, Queens, Staten Island/Richmond) has its own designated newspapers. Your LLC's registered county determines which borough's papers you must use.
